Pre Reflection
During our Socratic seminar Grant said “Happiness comes from the heart, not from the brain” I loved this comment. I felt that what he said was very important to me. This comment has helped me clarify the thoughts that I had in my head. I agree with this statement a hundred percent and hope everyone else does to.
I feel that I did well in this seminar. I did much better of engaging with others people’s ideas and comments. I did feel like I could of made more text connections, though. I’ve improved on listening to people speak. I’ve also gotten much better on attacking the idea instead of the person, as that was a problem for me before. I definitely grew since the last seminar we had.
The key take away I have is the knowledge of true happiness. I have learned that our society is too comfortable, and even though it might be miserable at the time, pain can be a good thing. I have learned that pain is the key to being wise. I will also take away that material cannot give you real happiness, which before this book, I thought I could. Now I will strive to feel a more pure and natural form of happiness and allow myself to feel pain when it is necessary. This book has helped me grow as a person and realize the faults within myself.

Seminar Pre-write
Uno and Danny are the two main characters in a book called Mexican White Boy. The
book covers the summer of these two boys. They both wear masks the society has
socialized into them. Danny wears a white person mask. Danny is half white and
half Mexican, but because of his mother was white and he went to an all white
private school. Even when Danny was in National City and around so many Mexicans
he still acted like he was white and even still dressed the same. Danny feels
like he doesn’t belong in any group. His other mask that he is asked to wear is his
Mexican one. Danny tries to wear this mask that involves drinking and other
illegal activities, and that’s not what Danny is like. Uno wears one mask. Uno
tries to act like this large and tough man, but he is not. Uno is a very social
person who has a lot of feelings. When Uno is around Danny, he becomes more
himself.
Socialization is a large part of MWB. Danny is surrounded by different means of socialization
and different cultures. His mother is white and his dad is Mexican so he’s
socialized into different cultures. The actions that Danny does is socialized
into him. Both Danny and Uno are the way they are because of socialized.
New insights I gained about race and
economic class, is how much it affect you and your fate. I also realized that if
you have a minority race and lower class, it is very hard it get out of it.
