Junior Year LINK Internship
LINK or Leading Internships for New Knowledge is a three week break in our daily classes to go out in the community, both local and nationally, to intern with a business of interest for their future. These three weeks in March was created to allow us, the students, to determine what we would like to do in our future and give us a resume builder for our college experience. More info, including where some students have interned locally, nationally and even internationally can be found on this link http://ahsinternships.weebly.com.
My LINK will take place at Riverhouse Children's Center in my hometown of Durango. River house is a child care center where children can grow and learn in a safe environment while developing skills for life long achievement. They use The Creative Curriculum™ to address individual students needs and developmental tracking. My mentor is Colombe Girolimon. She is the program administrator for the center. I am hoping to learn about the importance of early child care, how it's done and what effect it has on the child.
My main goal for these three weeks is to understand early childhood care, gain more independence and responsibility and make a small healthy impact on the children. As I continue to get older and my future looms ahead of me, I am realizing that I have a passion for children, as well as teaching dance, and I believe this is a good way to understand children better and develop my skills with them. My independence as an adult is staring me in the face, and LINK will help me better face those responsibilities. LINK definitely will teach me a better workplace responsibility.

Project
For my project I created an art project for the children to do based on the months classroom theme of the Spring and Eric Carle books. For this I had to come up with an age appropriate art project that could be adjusted to each child's needs and preferences. I decided on a handprint caterpillar inspired by Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This proved to be difficult due to the attention spans of the children and their assistance on how they wanted to do it, but I was able to get some awesome (and adorable) caterpillars!!
